1 At that time the Roman emperor, Augustus, decreed that a census should be taken throughout the Roman Empire. ²(This was the first census taken when Quirinius was governor of Syria.) ³All returned to their own ancestral towns to register for this census. ⁴And because Joseph was a descendant of King David, he had to go to Bethlehem in Judea, David’s ancient home. He traveled there from the village of Nazareth in Galilee. ⁵He took with him Mary, his fiancée, who was now obviously pregnant.

⁶And while they were there, the time came for her baby to be born. ⁷She gave birth to her first child, a son. She wrapped him snugly in strips of cloth and laid him in a manger, because there was no lodging available for them.

⁸That night there were shepherds staying in the fields nearby, guarding their flocks of sheep. ⁹Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared among them, and the radiance of the Lord’s glory surrounded them. They were terrified, ¹⁰but the angel reassured them. “Don’t be afraid!” he said. “I bring you good news that will bring great joy to all people. ¹¹The Savior—yes, the Messiah, the Lord—has been born today in Bethlehem, the city of David! ¹²And you will recognize him by this sign: You will find a baby wrapped snugly in strips of cloth, lying in a manger.”

¹³Suddenly, the angel was joined by a vast host of others—the armies of heaven—praising God and saying,

¹⁴“Glory to God in highest heaven,
and peace on earth to those with whom God is pleased.”

¹⁵When the angels had returned to heaven, the shepherds said to each other, “Let’s go to Bethlehem! Let’s see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”

¹⁶They hurried to the village and found Mary and Joseph. And there was the baby, lying in the manger. ¹⁷After seeing him, the shepherds told everyone what had happened and what the angel had said to them about this child. ¹⁸All who heard the shepherds’ story were astonished, ¹⁹but Mary kept all these things in her heart and thought about them often. ²⁰The shepherds went back to their flocks, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen. It was just as the angel had told them. Luke 2:1-20

As I imagine Mary, a young mother looking for a place to have her baby and finding nowhere to stay it makes me feel sad. Here she was carrying a baby who was God’s gift to the world and yet there was no place in the world for her to stay.

Though this happened many years ago there are other young mothers right now around the world who are living in extreme poverty who need to know they aren’t alone.

Did you know that every minute a child around the world dies from Malaria?

What this means is…

that In the amount of time it took me to brush my teeth this morning, 2 children died from Malaria.

During my 20 minute trip through the grocery store… 20 children died from Malaria.

While I had lunch with a friend… 60 children died from Malaria.

While I watch a movie later this evening… 120 children will die from Malaria.

And when I go to bed tonight by the time I wake up 480 children will have died from Malaria!

Did you know that malaria is fully treatable and also preventable?

No child should have to die from something that is totally preventable and that is why today’s 12 Days of Giving Christmas Away gift is – the gift of Mosquito Nets.

Malaria is true reality for families living in poverty in over half of the world and to think that it could be prevented yet kids are still dying from this seems totally wrong.

Music Monday ~ Mary did you Know? ~ Day 8 of 12 Days of Giving Christmas Away

Hi there and Happy Music Monday!

Not only is today Music Monday on the blog, but it’s also Christmas week and we are also on Day 8 of 12 Days of Giving Christmas away. As you know, for the past 7 days I have wrote a whole lot about gift giving and have posted several gifts that are great ways to help someone to know the love of Jesus during the Christmas season and also all year-long. (If you missed any posts you can read them all –> here)

As we move closer to Christmas, more and more Christmas songs are being played on the radio and one of my favorite Christmas songs right now is ‘Mary Did You Know?’ and my favorite version is this one sung by Danny Gokey…

Wasn’t that great?!

The words to this song make me think of my own children when I carried them inside of my body. I used to sit sometimes with my hands on my belly feeling life moving inside of me as I would wonder what the baby would be like. I also knew that I was already in love with the tiny little person inside of me even though I hadn’t met him yet.

A few weeks ago my daughter, who is now pregnant was visiting and she announced, “my baby is kicking.” Suddenly everyone in the room was around her and we all began taking turns putting our hands on her belly to feel the baby as he moved. Just as it had been with my own children I wondered what he will be like, and I also know that I am already in love with my grandson even though I haven’t met him yet.

I often wonder what sort of things did Mary think about as she waited for the birth of her baby. Did she wonder what her child would be like, as love filled her heart for her child she hadn’t met yet? And how would she have felt had she known that her baby was actually a gift of love that God was not only givng to her but he was also giving to the whole world?

Luke 1:26-38 ²⁶In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a village in Galilee, ²⁷to a virgin named Mary. She was engaged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of King David. ²⁸Gabriel appeared to her and said, “Greetings, favored woman! The Lord is with you!”

²⁹Confused and disturbed, Mary tried to think what the angel could mean.³⁰“Don’t be afraid, Mary,” the angel told her, “for you have found favor with God! ³¹You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus.³²He will be very great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David. ³³And he will reign over Israel^[forever; his Kingdom will never end!”

³⁴Mary asked the angel, “But how can this happen? I am a virgin.”

³⁵The angel replied, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the baby to be born will be holy, and he will be called the Son of God. ³⁶What’s more, your relative Elizabeth has become pregnant in her old age! People used to say she was barren, but she has conceived a son and is now in her sixth month. ³⁷For the word of God will never fail.”

³⁸Mary responded, “I am the Lord’s servant. May everything you have said about me come true.” And then the angel left her.

What I find most interesting about this passage is that when the angel told Mary that she was going to conceive a baby she didn’t argue or say something like, “let me pray on this and get back to you.” She just took the angels word about everything and she answered, “I am the Lord’s servant.”

If she had known the full story in detail what would have her answer have been?

What if she had known that one day when her son became a man, people would follow him and worship him?

What if she had know that one day some of those same people would turn on her son and then ridicule and torture Him until he died a horrible death?

I have a feeling her answer still would have been the same.

I wonder how she would have felt had she have known that one day her son would rise from the dead and be savior to all?

I wonder how would she have felt had she known that for hundreds of years to come people would celebrate her son’s Birthday?

The whole reason we even have Christmas in the first place is to celebrate Jesus.

JESUS – God’s gift to the world. He is the gift that when we accept, he changes everything, from the way we see things to the reason we live. Without Him life has no meaning and believe me when I say that I do know how that feels, because there once was a time that I did not have Jesus in my life.

Nobody should not have Jesus in their life. That is why for today’s 12 Days of Giving Christmas Away gift I would like to give you the opportunity to help make the difference in the life of a child by sponsoring a child through Compassion International.

Baking Classes to Help Ericka Become a Chef – 12 Days of Giving Christmas Away

Today was Christmas cookie baking day at my house.

I started with M & M Cookies.

Then moved on to Peanut Blossoms.

And then for the big finish and my favorite, Fudge.

As I was baking I started thinking about my Compassion Sponsor child ‘Ericka’. This past September I had the opportunity to visit Ericka in El Salvador.

One of the things Ericka shared with me me during our visit is that she wants to be a Chef when she grows up.

The very next day after visiting Ericka we visited a Compassion project in San Salvador that had a baking class.

In the baking class the children were learning how to cook, and that day they were making garlic bread loaves. We were all able to sample them and they were delicious!

The kids really seemed to enjoy the class and shared with us what they were learning and they told us they wanted to be chefs when they grew up.

By being in Compassion’s sponsorship program they were able to be a part of this class and they were learning a very valuable skill that would not only help them at home to safely prepare meals, but also would help them in the future as a job skill they would be able to use for creating and selling food in the market.

This was something I didn’t realize was available to the children and when I saw this I realized that what Ericka had said the day before about wanting to be a chef someday was actually a possibility and it was something she could learn right in her Compassion project!

How exciting is that?!!

So that brings me to today’s Giving Christmas Away gift – the gift of Baking Classes.

No Time to Write Because I Want to Read A Book and Go to Sleep

Hey There! As you probably know by now for the past 5 days I have been talking about giving Christmas away on the blog. Another thing you probably know is that I have said I will be doing this for 12 days in a row and I am not someone who usually writes a blog post every day.

So this post makes post number 6…. that is 6 in a row and for me that may be some some sort of record….but tonight I almost messed that up. I have been busy busy busy since 5:30 am and here in Missouri it’s now 12:00 am and the truth is I had planned to go to bed and read till I slipped off into dreamland, which probably would have came quicky for me tonight.

I had my jammies on and was under the covers snuggling in with my book when suddenly I felt the nudge. You know the nudge you feel when the Holy Spirit says, “Um excuse me, you seem to have forgot something.”

I lay there minute thinking, I am tired and I can do it in the morning. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t turn off the feeling that I needed to write this post now. So here I am writing it even though I really have no words in my brain to write, because my brain is maybe already sleeping.

Also there are so so many gifts to chose from it is hard to decide which gift is most needed but after a little bit of praying and looking over the list of gifts I am planning to share this week I am thinking maybe the best way to give Christmas away today is giving the gift of books….after all, reading is what I was doing when I almost forgot to write this post. And books are needed. BIG time.

Did you know that textbooks are hard for children in poverty to get?

Schools are very crowded and many schools don’t have enough textbooks and many don’t have any textbooks at all. Can you imagine going to school and not having any books? That is a sad reality for many children.

Children really need books!

When you help provide books for a library at a Compassion Project you will give children tools for an education and help strengthen their minds.

Pigs, chickens and Goats! – Twelve Days of Giving Christmas Away

Yesterday I finally managed to get all of my Christmas presents wrapped except for one present for my daughter which I ordered online. I’ve been waiting ~~patiently~~…. okay make that not so patiently for it to be delivered. I received and email yesterday telling me it will be here by December 24, so Ugh and thank you Target for leaving me on pins and needles wondering if her gift will get here by Christmas.

I was thinking today about how I spend so much time searching for just the right gift for each person on my list. This gift is something I know she really wants and needs and also one I am excited to give her (I can’t say what it is here just in case she is reading my blog). I will be really disappointed if it doesn’t get here on time.

Finding the right gift for my kids seems a lot harder now that they are adults but shopping for my grand kids is easy. When I shop for them the gifts practically jump off the shelf into my cart and I have to stop myself from buying them too much.

Today I was looking once again through the Compassion Christmas catalog and noticed they have some pretty unique gifts in it. They are gifts that are not your normal type of Christmas present. While I am spoiling my grand kids with toys there are kids in the world who are asking for things like chickens, goats, and pigs for Christmas. For a family in poverty, gifts like these are truly needed and wanted, and they can provide food or be a way to generate income. A goat can provide milk for a family, pigs reproduce very fast and can be sold or used as food. A chicken can provide eggs to be eaten or sold in the market for income or even hatched into more chickens.

12 Days of Giving Christmas Away – Feed a mother and Baby

Last night my husband and I had a frozen pizza for dinner. Normally frozen pizza would not be my number one choice for dinner but my husband was the chef for the evening and that is what he cooked. The way I see it is if I don’t have to cook the meal then don’t I have a thing to complain about.

When I really think about it, the fact that I have any kind of food at all gives me even more reason to have nothing to complain about.

Water of Life – 12 Days of Giving Christmas Away

Did you know that every day hundreds of children get sick from drinking water?

And did you know that every 15 minutes a child dies from water related diseases?

The video below shows Fiona, a little girl in Rwanda collecting water for her family. The water her family drinks looks like nothing I have ever had to drink and I could never imagine what it would be like to have to give dirty water to my children to drink.

A Very Special Music Monday – Kickoff to Twelve Days of Giving Christmas Away

Today I had to go to Walmart.

Walmart isn’t exactly my favorite place to shop and I usually avoid Walmart if at all possible. Today I had no other options but to go to Walmart because I really needed white Kit Kat bars for a candy bar house that I am going to make for my grand kids for Christmas. This past week I visited just about every store in my town in search of the white Kit Kats but nobody had them and as you probably already know…Walmart has just about everything.

Before I go any farther let me assure you this is not a Walmart bashing blog post. I have nothing against Walmart other than it is a huge store and if I go in for only one thing I still seem to somehow get sucked in for longer than expected and I usually come out with a whole lot more than I went in for. Also in my town Walmart is always really crowded so I also always feel very stressed out after I leave there.

This morning I made the decision that if I was going to make the candy bar house for the grand kids and have it come out looking like it was supposed to look, then I had no other option except to face the fact that I was going to have to go to Walmart and today was the day!

As I drove to the store I came up with a plan of action for a quick enter and exit.

The plan was… I would go into the store and only travel the front isle of the store as I checked all of the pay lanes for the candy bars, hopefully find them, and then get out quickly!

I’m sure you already know…. my plan did not go as planned.

Upon entering the store I noticed right away that they had put a bunch of isles full of Christmas stuff right by the door. I am not really sure how it happened but the next thing I knew it was like a vacuum had sucked me in and a full hour and a half had gone by before I finally exited the store with a whole cart full of stuff!

Yes I was a little stressed from the crowd, but I did get my Christmas shopping closer to being finished, and YES I did get my white Kit Kat bars!

Hallelujah!!!

Did you know there are only 12 more shopping days left until it is Christmas?

Since I am talking about Christmas shopping today, I also want to talk about why we have Christmas in the first place.

Christmas is the day we celebrate the birthday of Jesus Christ. He was God’s gift sent to save us. His gift is free to anyone who wants to accept it.

Personally I am forever grateful for His amazing gift and my life will be forever changed because of it.

Something I notice though is that in all of the rush of things we do in preparation of the Christmas holiday, Jesus sometimes seems to get pushed to the back when he was actually the whole reason for the holiday in the first place.

Why if Jesus is the reason for the season is everyone so stressed out and cranky?? Why are we spending all our time trying to find someone the perfect gift when God already gave us the perfect gift???

This brings me to today’s Music Monday song “Give this Christmas Away” by Matthew West and Amy Grant.

As you all know children are near and dear to my heart, and especially those who live in extreme poverty. The words to this song along with seeing the children in the video receiving shoeboxes full of gifts just warms my heart. These shoeboxes are packed through a ministry called Operation Christmas Child by people all around the world and given out by the hands of the local churches. Along with each shoebox full of gifts every single child also receives the ‘The Greatest Journey’ which is a Bible study program that teaches them about what it means to faithfully follow Jesus Christ. The children who receive these boxes are given the hope that only Jesus can give.
